Self-service data visualization supports the decentralized deployment of analytics and enables self-service exploration of data for individuals and groups. Applying governance in a self-service environment is becoming increasingly important.
What exactly is self-service data visualization? Well, it should mean that you can answer your own questions, quickly and confidently, without the need to rely on IT and without worrying about where the data came from.
There are 3 parts to self-service:
- First, it’s for business users who simply need immediate answers to their questions, without having to constantly depend on overburdened IT. Self-service to them is delivered by dynamic and interactive visual dashboards, which allow them to answer their own streams of questions by starting anywhere in the app. They can easily, click, filter, associate and search – finding the answers they need so the appropriate actions can be taken. They may even discover amazing things hidden in the data, allowing them to see the whole story, something often missed with other BI tools.
- Second, it’s for people who have deeper questions not answered in the dashboard that was built for them. They need more flexibility. Unlike other data visualization tools that force a local download, which can result in uncontrolled chaos, Qlik Sense can help them create their own views of the data in the app by taking advantage of central libraries, or can add their own data, and use the point, click, drag and drop simplicity of Qlik Sense, allowing them to create powerful visual analytics all within a trusted environment.
- Third, self-service is also for business analysts who can start out from scratch with a blank canvas to quickly access and associate many different data sources with a few mouse clicks, easily create visualizations that are automatically linked to each other, explore and understand the data visually, discover key insights and build dashboards and applications that are shared by others.
Guided analytics, often referred to a governed data discovery by Gartner is about the centralized deployment of business intelligence and analytics via pre-built dashboards and reports to multiple knowledge workers across the business and which align to a particular business process or workflow i.e. marketing performance dashboards, sales performance etc.
What is guided analytics?
Guided Analytics apps are operational, mission critical visual analytical applications that are centrally deployed by Reporting or Operational groups to multiple knowledge workers. Designed to solve a particular business problem or need, they contain KPI’s and other important metrics from multiple data sources that are refreshed daily or weekly, allowing a business user to click, filter, drill-down and search the information that is most relevant to their business function to inform their decision making.
Unlike other BI tools that enforce preconceived hierarchies and preconceived notions of how data should be related, with Qlik the app allows the user to explore the data from any angle, while also guiding the user to the answers they seek, providing a level of flexibility and control you won’t find with other data visualizations tools, allowing them to answer additional questions that arise and to see the whole story that lives within their data.
Embedded analytics refers to the embedding of analytics, dashboards and visualizations in a internal or external facing website/intranet/extranet or other enterprise application, often for a specific audience or align to a specific business process the enterprise application supports.
With the Qlik Sense platform application developers can reuse their stunning visualizations and analytics by embedding them anywhere, delivering greater value to business users and scaling to any size within their organization. Taking full advantage of Qlik’s unique Associative Model, which allows you to see the whole story that lives within your data, embedded analytics solutions can range from the simple to the advanced, such as embedding existing Qlik Sense objects in simple web mashups or into sophisticated enterprise applications such as a CRM or ERP solutions. Qlik’s Embedded Analytics can also be used to deliver visual analytics to enterprise applications developed in-house, providing a set of common visuals, data, security and management across all your visual analytics solutions. Business users benefit from having all the relevant information at their fingertips as they use their business apps.
Custom analytics applications are those built by for example a web developer to support a specific business process or use case. For example a custom built application looking at travel or expense management, sales performance etc
Custom analytics applications are full-fledged visual analytics web applications that take full advantage of Qlik’s QIX data indexing engine. Designed and built by web developers and used by both business and consumer audiences on tablet, PC or mobile devices, they utilize a full range of web technologies like HTML5 and modern visualization libraries like D3 and InfoVis.
They contain important data from multiple data sources allowing a user to click, filter, drill-down and search the information that is contained in the app. Typically they have a very modern, attractive look and feel, to promote ‘stickiness’ to the app and optimize the user experience.
All this is made possible through Qlik’s modern engine APIs – allowing unfettered access to the same core engine used to build Qlik products – the same engine that delivers the unique Associative Model which allows you to find the whole story that lives within your data. Unlike other BI solutions that only focus on business problems, with Qlik Sense the possibilities are endless, because if you can imagine it, you can build it!
Reporting and Collaboration
The final use case, Reporting and collaboration supports the centralized creation and automated distribution of pixel perfect reports to a broad range of users across the enterprise and is supported by our NPrinting offering.
Qlik Sense creates a collaborative community around data, ensuring that everyone benefits from, and is able to contribute, to the collective wisdom of the organization. This is done with Qlik Sense using streams, collaborative creation and data storytelling; and can be extended outside of Qlik Sense by exporting to commonly used business tools and formats.
Qlik Sense Streams organize and secure dashboards, bookmarks and data stories into logical groupings. As new content is made available to the community, it appears in the appropriate stream making it easy for everyone to find and benefit from the new content.[JC1]
Data story telling provides a way to convert insights into a compelling narrative. Throughout data stories, users can add visual effects, commentary, and images to their collected analysis. This enables the presenter to highlight various points and provide context as the story guides the viewer through the presenter’s findings. If any questions arise, the presenter can seamlessly go back to the full analysis in its captured context, and perform additional analysis in real-time then return to the data story to continue with their findings. The whole story that lives within the data can be communicated and if needed re-explored without leaving Qlik Sense.
The insights gained in Qlik Sense can be shared easily with anyone. You can share, individual visualizations, entire sheets and even full data stories with decision makers both inside and outside your organization. You can even share semi-interactive charts with the world through social media, blogs and website using Qlik Sense Charts.
QlikView NPrinting is Qlik’s reporting and distribution application for QlikView, helping organizations spread knowledge and insight by creating and distributing great looking reports. QlikView NPrinting offers reporting in formats such as Microsoft Office and pixel perfect .PDF, using data and analytics from QlikView. QlikView NPrinting ensures that the right reports get to the right people, how and when they need them, either through centralized scheduling and distribution or on-demand requests directly from QlikView apps.
