Width of bars in chart

I have a bar chart with a continuous X axis (so that I can add a line at a critical value) and static min, max, and step.  When I make selections on the data, the widths of the bars change.  This is very distracting to the user and provides no value to the chart.

Two Questions:

1. Is there a way to force the bars in a stacked bar chart to maintain their width when values are selected, and

2. Is there a way to force them to be as wide as possible without overlapping?  (They start out very skinny, but if certain values are selected they get so fat they overlap.)

1. Not unless you show all dimension values on the x-axis regardless of the selections.

2. Not as far as I know.
