What to suggest? QlikView or Qlik Sense?

Hi all Qlik Techies,

There are lot of material on the community and web for the comparison of these two different products from the Qlik Family but I am confused that when a new client who is in need of a Business Intelligence Solutions, what should we pitch first now? and on the basis of what factors or criteria?

stevedark‌ & hic‌ Please share your valuable thoughts.

Thanks and regards,

That is a really good point about how the products are going to be developed going forward, and as swuehl‌ points out QV12 was a real indicator of the future of QlikView.  If someone is looking at a longer term plan, then Sense certainly wins out on that point.  In time, all of the features that you would expect in a BI product will be there - even if your expectations have been set sky high by QlikView.

As a solution provider though I still have to look at the most cost effective method for delivering any given solution, on time and to specification.  In many cases (where it isn't a real "self service" scenario) QlikView will win out, mostly due to the reduced consultancy time in getting something built that delivers.  Cycle groups and actions allow for very flexible apps to be built very quickly - alternate dimensions in Sense do not cut it in the same way to my mind.

To pick up on the Self Service point for a moment, personally I think that this requirement is a bit of a myth.  Some functionality is available in QlikView for this, and most of my clients will lock down and turn this off as soon as possible.  Generally, without a good understanding of the back end, the data model and basic data visualisation principles, end users will wind up creating inaccurate and misleading charts.  To be honest, I even see people who claim to be skilled developers making some very basic mistakes in this regards.

Finally, to pick up on robert99‌ 's point, I do really enjoy using Sense - as long as what I am creating is within it's capabilities.

Great to see some much needed discussion going on about the two products and their relative merits.

"To pick up on the Self Service point for a moment,"

Self service is my favourite new feature in Sense. And I stress this feature in any demos I do. About how it empowers the user. It puts you in control sort of line not some computer bod. Last demo I showed how easy and quick it was to copy and change a sheet. And to use the exploration menu to change chart colours. The demo overall went well. But this approach (empowering users) was in alignment with this company. But with another (ruling from the center type / treat employees like children) company I will stress that users can also be locked down if required (although I don't agree with doing this).

But I don't know if this is a big thing or not. But for me some controlled user empowerment is the future. But I have read a Power BI v Sense comparison that dismissed this. I think this writer was wrong and they will also move in this direction.

Re creating inaccurate and misleading charts. I have found Sense requires a different mindset on my part to achieve self service. So to trust users more and train them so they can use self service. But more care is needed to set up master dimension and metrics. And I need to resist the temptation to help Qlikers. Like using triggers for example (thankfully not available yet) or building too much into the metrics. Like a YTD component (let them select the require months). Limit the number of master expressions. And I link calendars to have only one month etc. Unsure how this will work out though but my view is if users cant handle self service maybe they can't even analyze reports. So BI is a bit pointless anyway for them.

I have to say, that seeing the new video promoting Qlik Sense 3, it troubles me that time has been put into a gloopy UI for the Associative Modelling part, rather than adding some of the much needed features, like trend lines:

To my mind, not only does it show a lack of prioritisation, I think it cheapens and plays down what is supposed to be an enterprise class tool aimed squarely at business users.

Am I alone in this thinking?  Perhaps I am getting dull in my old age.

Thank you all for your inputs. This is turning out to be a healthy discussion.

So now we (as a solution provider/re-seller) should go for Qlik Sense first unless there are some scenarios where QlikView wins the race with keeping in mind that Qlik's strategic vision found much clear for Qlik Sense as they are more focused on its development.

What about the server administration part?

Does Qlik Sense have all the enterprise level  functionalities as we have in QlikView Server/Publisher like Clustering and the functionality of loop and reduce???

Sense is Enterprise ready, the QMC is more user friendly in Sense and the spreading services across different nodes is simpler in Sense.  Given it is also going to be getting the lion's share of the development there is no reason to go for QlikView on this basis - unless you have a prospect that will only go for technology that has been tried and tested for many years.

I see that this post was written 3 years ago. I am in the midst of evaluating moving over from Qlikview to Sense.

Have there been many updates in Qlik Sense to warrant any problems you had back in 2016?

I worked with Qlikview for a good 15 years on and off, but downloaded the desktop version for Qlik Sense. So far I haven't been able to evaluate it yet. Had some problems with loading data still. Not sure what it is.
