Does hashing of primarykeys improve performance?

Hi,

this is my first question, so sorry if i violate any rules of this forum.

Can someone tell me about the advantages of hashing primary-keys?

For example the hash128() gives a 22 character string, so using this hash for lets say a field with maximum 20 character string doesn't make sense to me. Are there some other advantages of hashing primary-keys, which may result in faster response time?

I'm asking because i've just heared of the recommendation to hash primary-keys for increasing performance.

Thanks!

Tobi
