Customizing Dimensions

Hello, new to Qlik here.

I'd like to build a custom Dimension.  My field, is "Departments" , within the field I have several variables, Sales, Operations, Finance, etc.

I try to use:

Sum(Department[Sales])

But that does not work.

If I don't select the department, and I create a measure, it will aggregate everything in the field "Departments."

Thanks!

You need to add one dimension and one measure

Dimension

Department

Measure

Sum(Sales)

Hi Dennis,

I think you are a bit confused with the terminology - Dimensions, Variables, Measures, etc... Why don't you explain in plain English what are you trying to accomplish?

If you need a chart of Sales by Department, then simply select Department as a Dimension and sum(Sales) as the Measure. Is your problem more complex than that?

cheers,

I'd like to create a bar chart that will show only the expenses for sales for the months Jan-April

DepartmentExpensesMonth
Sales10January
Sales43Feb
Sales4March
Sales6April
Marketing34January
Marketing6Feb
Marketing23March
Marketing43April

Currently I have to create a filter pane with the dimension "Department" so I can filter on departments.

I would like to make a custom measure that takes the sum of Sales, without using the filter pain.
