Hierarchy and Loading hierarchy data

I woudl like to know when to use Hierarchy or Loading hierarchy data .

If i have a simple table with 5 fields in hierachy (dimension table), should I use the hiearchy or it will work as a hierarchy automatically?

In not clear, coudl any one explain it with an example.
