Excel export not working from IE Plugin

I have a qlikview document with a variety of objects on it.

Most of the objects have the Excel button on them.

From Qlikview desktop version the Excel button opens Excel and puts the data in a new spreadsheet.

From IE Plugin, Excel opens but no data appears.

Is this a bug in IE Plugin?

From another thread I took the suggestion to turn off protected mode in IE. It now works, but should it not work in protected mode?

I added the server as a trusted site and it works now.
