trial version - QlikView Personal Edition

what kind of data can you import with the trial version?

because I downloaded the trial version, I can only import data into excel.

There is no limitation at all with Personal Edition - except that you cannot open files created by other people.

To load data from a database, you need to

  1. define an ODBC data source. E.g. in the Edit Script dialog, use Tools - ODBC administrator.
  2. Create a Connect statement (Press connect button and follow instructions)
  3. Create one or several Select statements (Press Select button and follow instructions)

You can load data using inline, excel, csv, tsv, odbc / oledb connection  and so on.

There are some advantages to using an OLE DB connection over an ODBC connection. Firstly, with OLE DB, your connection string along with credentials stays with your QlikView document, whereas with ODBC you will have to set up a User/System DSN(in ODBC Administrator Control Panel Applet) and then reference this DSN in the QlikView load script.
