Message: No Server – QV11 SR2

We have been running our environment (unchanged) for about a year and started noticing that our users were getting the red ‘Message: No Server’ on access point. We do see error messages in the Web Server logs and are working through them. The QVMC shows no issues and lists both QVS’s as fully functional. Given that this issue started appearing for seemingly no reason I wanted to ask the community if they have experienced this before.

Do you know what (at a high level) causes this error? Is it a communication error between the Web Server and QVS? [they are on the same physical server in our environment]

Is it possible that we crossed some sort of threshold like number of applications or load on QVS? (our QVS is only using a quarter of its memory, and barely any CPU).

Is it possible that a Windows patch was applied to IIS or OS and is causing this issue?

The QVWS logging level is set to ‘high’ – could the added load account for this? The log files are split daily and are < 10MB in size.

Anyone deal with this before?

Environment:

3 physical servers Win Server 2008R2, 56GB, 64-bit

Server 1:  QVMS, QVDS, QV Directory Connector

Server 2: IIS, Directory Connector, QVS (clustered with Server 3)

Update - Although we had been assured by a few individuals in our infrastructure team that virus scanning was not the issue, we found out today that real-time virus scanning was, in fact, enabled for our entire QlikView environment (including our .pgo files). Previous comments have indicated that this issue can be caused by virus scanning, so I am highly suspicious that this will be our issue. We have exempted specific file extensions from scanning, and are working on limiting the real-time scanning activities.

Update – We have not had this error message since our memory heap change. If, in fact, the issue is resolved it would have been one of three things that fixed it:

  1. Memory heap change
  2. Upgrading old Plugin version to current version
  3. Excluding QlikView directories and file extensions from anti-virus scans

As an interesting note after our memory heap change we noticed that our QVS servers were using much more memory. Prior to the change they seemed to be limited at using only about 30% of their memory, now they are using about 60%. The number isn’t 100% because our hardware is oversized for our environment, so we are only expecting to utilize about 60% of our memory.

Here is an Update

We are now running our 3 nodes cluster without any warning or error for onne week now. We did the following further to QV support recommendations:

- Completely switched off antivirus

- Completely switched off windows firewall

- Installed  2008 R2 SP1

- Apply KB 2465772

We also plan to apply KB300956 as recommended by Qlikview support.

On medium term we have in mind to re-activate the antivirus without scan of the Qlikview folders, re-activate the windows firewall with proper ports opened and check if stability remains.

BR,

Olivier

We still have not had the error message.

Update:  We had the error late last week. We noticed that our QVS servers were consuming ~70% of their memory. A restart resolved the issue. This is the only known occurrence of this problem since our memory heap change. We have added these servers back to our weekly restart schedule.
