Books on QlikView by packtpub

Hi,

does anyone have experience with the books on QlikView offered at packtpub_publishing or elsewhere? - actually I would prefer the O'Reilly_publishing because they don't use DRM, but they don't seem to have anything on QlikView?

I would like to learn more on the subject to be able to make still better apps:

- I have "QlikView 11 for Developers", which I find an excellent  book for both QlikView_beginners and experienced developers - there's
  always something new.

- I have been working in my current role as QlikView developer/ GUI_designer/ admin in March.
=> Before that, i have already had four years of experience with a similar tool - focused on data_analysis, though, not on the
   presentation_side

Can anybody give me a hint as to which of the available publications might be recommendable for me?

Thanks a lot!

Best regards,

DataNibbler

Hi,

Packt Publishing's catalogue is now available via O'Reilly - check out the link for the 4 titles currently available.

I've learnt a lot from the books made available through Packt and if you're interest in creating UIs and developing for the front-end then you should probably check out Karl Pover's "Learning QlikView Data Visualization."

Hi IsrarKhan,

thank you!

That looks good and it's not too expensive, so chances are good my company will pay 😉

I will also have a look at the two docs you sent me.

Best regards,

DataNibbler

P.S.: I think I've read some version of the first one - unfortunately, the design guidelines I have to follow here - wished_for by management - are m.o.l. the exact opposite of the key_line to "minimize non_data pixels" ... well, never mind. The other one, though, is very interesting. I'll convert it to epub (using calibre on Linux, very recommendable, though a bit offhand here) and read it on the train.

Hi Charles,

that is good news indeed.

O'Reilly doesn't have DRM, so I much prefer getting books that should also be generally available for the company from them.

Rgd. the UI, I am quite restricted in my freedom of creation by management's wishes and ideas, so I'll probably not go for this,  but rather for "functional" books. Also, I am more of a background_developer, not so much of a Frontend_designer.

Thanks a lot!

Hi Charles,

I don't know, I couldn't find anything on QlikView at O'Reilly - what's wrong there?

Hi DataNibbler,

If you select the hyperlinked O'Reilly in my previous response or follow -- O'Reilly Search: qlikview

-- you'll see there are 4 listed.

Cheers,

Charles

The books can all be purchased directly from Packt Publishing.  They make eBooks available for download as PDF, so no DRM worries there.  They quite often have good discounts on too.

Packt's website is here: Home | Packt Publishing

They now have six QlikView titles available (seven if you count the Spanish translation of one separately), including the recently released book on QlikView server, this link should list them:  Search | Packt Publishing

I have provided technical review for four of the books and can vouch for their standard.  I've written a bit about them on my blog here:

Hope that helps,

Steve

Hi Steve,

I just have a quick question on that last book on QlikView_Server, I don't know if you have already read that:

- We don't have the Publisher and we are definitely not going to purchase that;

- Likewise, we are not going to purchase the Enterprise_Server (anytime soon), we're going to go along with SBE.

=> Is it still recommendable to purchase that book?

=> If ´that promotion is still running, I will purchase that as an ebook. 5$ is an amount I'm willing to spend even from my own purse 😉

Thanks a lot!

Hi there,

I read the book during production - as I was one of the technical review team.

There is quite a bit of the book that looks at setting up Publisher tasks and things which don't exist in standard Server (eg. external tasks), and also having a multi server installation - which you would not do with SBE.  However, it does make it clear when it is venturing into Publisher only territory and there is still a lot of very worthwhile material just on the Server components.  It would be good for helping you decide whether an upgrade to the other components is going to be worth it as well.

I don't believe the $5 offer is still going on - but they do have frequent offers on so keep an eye out if you want to save a a bit on the list price.

Hope that helps,

Steve
