Hi All,

We are using QV10 version and as a part weekly maintenance we are doing service restart, our environment looks more stable once we do this.

I think this subject has difference of opinions. Pls. share your views.

Hi Saravana

Why do you start doing this kind of maintenence? in my opionion doesnt change, it is not better or worst , but i would like to know if before start doing this you have several problems with the service and you had to restart with a lot of frequiency?

On a qv11 server I sometimes had reload problems and, after failed reload, performance problems.

QV Server, LoadBalancer.xml unexpected error

I scheduled a weekly restart and, since that, I didn't get any other problem.

Hi,

Per se, restarting any Windows service does not stabilize the environment nor the service. But for the hundred different reasons in your environment, you may need to do that, and there is nothing wrong in it.

But I agree as well that if you need to do that is probably because you are experiencing issues. If that is correct, then try to find out which issues they are, and do not work the symptoms, but the causes:

  • heavier expressions?
  • heavier documents with more objects and more sheets?
  • more complex data model?
  • more rows in the same model?
  • more users or concurrent users?

Maybe you need a complete infrastructure and applications healthcheck.

Hi All,

Thanks for your reply..

Yes due to perform reasons we are restarting it, feel much better when we do this.

We are using System monitor in our environment, so before we bring in the process of restarting the services weekly, it was showing up inappropriate details especially in Performance tab, for few users itself it was showing 100 GB like that.

But now this looks more reliable.

One more thing I'm bothered is about the Garbage collection of QV10 I don't know whether it is that efficient as latest version.

Thanks & Regards,

Hi Saravana,

Restarting the services clears the cache. This means that the next time you start using documents things might be a bit slower, as everything needs to be "cached up" and loaded into memory.

If you are experiencing issues with this, you might have a resource issue.

What specifically is "much better" due to your restarts?

Erik

Hi Erik,

Are you sure that memory management things will be taken care automatically? I think you've some solid understanding on that.

Note: I'm using QV10.

Hi Saravana,

Yes, old cache that is not used will be replaced by newer cache if needed. If not, it will stay in memory. Have a look at http://www.qlik.com/jp/~/media/Files/resource-library/global-us/direct/datasheets/DS-Technical-Brief... or http://www.qlik.com/au//~/media/Files/resource-library/global-us/direct/datasheets/DS-Technical-Brie... which can explain further in-depth about how it is used.

Regards,

Erik
