How to change Subtype field of Bar Chart

Hi All,

I have created Bar Chart with 3 dimensions and 1 expression. I got stacked chart as a result. I found that I cannot change Subtype field to Grouped because it is disabled.

Do you know how to change Subtype field to Grouped in this case ? (I don't have this problem when I use only 2 dimensions).

Thanks,

Olek.

Hi Olek,

Did you get any solution for this? I have very similar problem. When i add 3 dimensions the bars got stacked. Also in Style tab, Subtype options are disabled.

Thanks,

Boopathi

Hi,

Add one more Dummy expression which doesn't return any value and check

Adding an expression only makes you lose a dimension. This appears to be a limitation in QlikView. I don't know the particular graph that you want to generate, but a bar chart with 3 grouped dimensions would almost always be too complex and confusing for analysis.

For good and simplified analysis, turn your bar graph into a trellis chart. That will repeat a simple bar graph for each value in one of the dimensions. My customers usually don't know about this type of graph and are presently surprised when I show it to them.

Thanks.

Yes, when i add dummy expression i loose one dimension value. btw, I have attached the requirement. It has 4 dimension values in a bar chart. I understand it is not easy here. Let me try to go with different type of charts.

Thanks,

Yeah, kind of sad that it doesn't work. Seems like basic functionality to add as many dimensions as you want.

I think you could present almost the same information by making a straight table, then having a column with a linear gauge representation. Not sure you'll be able to color inbound and outbound differently that way though.

You could string the extra dimensions together so that it's really only two dimensions. Formatting wouldn't be ideal, but you might be able to get something close enough.

Thanks John. I am sure I'll be creating a straight table as you suggested. However i am keeping the chart with some changes.

Now I have only 2 dimensions and 2 expressions (one for Inbound and other one for Outbound) with legend. I guess this is pretty much match with requirement. And keep the straight table right below the chart.

Thanks for your suggestions

John has a good idea. Here's the example of the bar graph in a table with 4 dimensions. I couldn't change the color according to the dimension value and there is no scale, but other than that it doesn't look too bad.

Hmmm, well, we COULD put in an expression for the background color. That might be confusing, though, since it wouldn't be the bar that was the color. Still, maybe if it was just two similar shades of light gray... yeah, it doesn't look TOO bad.

And then I added the other idea of combining dimensions together as a second chart, with a color expression for the bars.

Lol...kudos. I was thinking about changing the background color and then using argb() to make the gauge transparent to simulate a bar with a different color, but that didn't work out so well.
