You would still get some sort of HA while doing kubernetes/os upgrades if you have 2 worker nodes so it's not entirely pointless.

virtual machines will help you simulate a highly available k8s cluster within one physical node. This physical node needs to become a hypervisor. You can then create VMs : 3 x VMs = 3 x masters 2 x VMs = 2 x workers Then you have a (false) HA k8s you can run test on
