UK based dedicated hardware provider - recommendation?

Hi All,

We have a severly underperforming server and are looking to replace this with a dedicated server via a host. Does anyone have a recommendation specifically for Qlikview deployments? Ideally I'd like to work with someone who understands the requirements of Qlikview and can deliver that quickly.

I know of two companies that do just that, Rackspace, based in the US and BiyCloud based in Spain.

Haven't worked with either of them.

Hi Gareth,

If your contact you partner or QlikView representative they can help you with hardware recommendations.

Some have been posted in various places on this community.

In general though I depends on usage pattern, applications etc.

A well stocked two CPU server is an excellent choice for performance.

For example: E5-2697v2 with 256 GB RAM or similar.

Thanks for your response - Basically what I need is some clear specs to work towards. Does Qliktech hold a list of important features (CPU specs, etc...) for a two CPU system with 128GB RAM and above? It's difficult to get what you need from dedicated providers who don't understand Qlikview.

What would be extremely helpful is to get a list of specs to build the 'Ferrari of Qlikview Hardware' so that I could try and meet these as best as possible.

I'm finding it very difficult to get these specifics from our provider. I have approached Qliktech but with no response.

Hi Gareth,

I have a few of my customers here in the UK running on RackSpace servers. The virtual servers can be spun up in next to no time and you can chose what specification you require. Obviously, whatever you go for is reflected in the price. The entry level is to have one of the virtual servers, but they also do co-location.

For QlikView you really require as much RAM as you can afford, a minimum of four cores is sensible - but again more if you can get it. Accurately specifying the box would require a lot of knowledge of your data and applications - but it is safe to say that bigger is better.

Personally, I have found RackSpace support to be very helpful, but I doubt they have any QlikView knowledge on the help desk (although they are a QlikView customer, interestingly enough). The web control panel for managing servers is intuitive enough as well.

I have also hosted QlikView with Amazon and this worked fine also, though I did not look after the control panel that time around. To be honest, unless you have specific requirements about where your data resides (eg. does it need to stay in the UK) the most important differentiator is probably the price.

Unfortunate that you QlikView reseller or partner did not reply.

Do try and contact support and they should be able to guide you to the right contact.

If you've settled for a two CPU system then the algorithm is quite simple.

Intel has faster RAM access than AMD so they are preferred.

The Intel E5-2600 v2 is the best performing chipset and higher core clock frequency is better for the few operations that

can only use a single core.

So then it comes down to E5-2690 v2 or E5-2697 v2 and 128GB RAM or more.

Steve - thanks for your response. I was under the impression, based on everything I've read from Qliktech, that a dedicated piece of hardware outperforms a virtual environment?

Hi Gareth,

In most cases virtual environments are fine. I've seen some very large implementations on virtual boxes. Where they can suffer is when memory is shared across boxes if QlikView tries to grab a lot of memory very quickly the virtual box may not hand it over quick enough - this can occasionally lead to issues. The cost saving and easy of setting up and backing up virtual servers can make them a very attractive proposition though.

Hello HVP,

I am looking into an alternative server. These are the specs, I've been told that the CPUs are pretty high spec, can you confirm that this server would be good for a large QView deployment ?

- Dell R810 PowerEdge

- 4 x Xeon E7-4870 (2.6GHz)

- 4 x 128GB SSD HDD (memory based drives)

- 128GB RAM (capacity for 768GB)

What are your thoughts on the 4 processors? Should I only be looking at 2 CPU boxes? I have been assured that NUMA would be disabled in the BIOS on build.

Are there any questions I need to ask based on these specs?

QlikView currently Partners with AWS and Rackspace.

Both have Data Centers in UK and can help you.

Putting QlikView in the cloud is supported by Qlik as well as partners.

The requirements you need are size of app, pefromance requiements, number of users.

Hi Gareth,

When talking about servers it is most important to talk about chipset architecture.

Well performing for QlikView and Intel are E7-48xx and E5-26xx.

If the chipsets above are used then the following would apply:

4 slot with 4 CPUs > 4 slot with 2 CPUs

2 slot with 2 CPUs > 4 slot with 2 CPUs

E7-48xx (4 CPUs) versus E5-26xx (2 CPUs) depends usage pattern and applications, but generally the E7 can have more users/apps while E5 is slightly faster.

I'd like to reiterate that this is a discussion better suited with representatives directly and

statements above are general guidance based on architectural layouts and performance tests of Intel chipsets.
