Hierarchy Load Infinte Loop

I'm attempting to perform a hierarchy load on a table containing two fields (parent and child). The table contains ~150k lines but when I run a HIERARCHY load it loops for hours on end.

On further investigation I found that some entries in the data link back to themselves i.e.

A -> B -> C -> D -> A

I am unable to get this data cleansed so am looking to create my own hierarchy script that stops running when an infinite loop is detected.

Has anyone done this before and is able to share their script? Alternatively does anyone have any pointers on how this could be done?
