Different field search behavior in Qlik Sense

I noticed a difference in field search behavior, and I'm hoping someone can educate me on why there is a difference.

I have a filter pane which includes the following fields (among others): UPC and Description.

When I enter text in the search box for UPC, I must also enter the wildcard (*) to return results that do not begin with the search criteria I entered.

However, when I enter search criteria for the Description field, the search behavior appears to automatically apply a 'wildcard' search.

We would prefer that the search behavior applies the 'wildcard' search logic to any field (like Description). Is there a setting we can change? And/or what's the logic for the differing search behaviors?
