topic hdfs put: could only be replicated to 0 nodes... in Talend Studio

I am testing out the config of a new download of Talend BD. Getting "could only be replicated to 0 nodes instead of minReplication" error trying to do a simple put of a couple of files in a directory. This seems to happen AFTER the first file in the directory is successfully uploaded to HDFS. (e.g., 3 files in directory, first one shows up when I look at HDFS with ambari, then stack trace and nothing more. If I try a different directory, same thing happens (1 of * files show up). No problem with disk space, lots available and the files are really small. HDFS is hortonworks sandbox 2.4.
I am following along the "getting started 6.2.1" guide to test it out, attempting to put "*" files from a single Win7 directory.
and I've already succesfully dealt with the "winutils.exe" issue.
Any ideas? thanks!
