Problem using studio with Admin user

I have an issue using studio Version: 5.5.1 Build id: r118616.
The company has a 2 named user license. Admin (Roles: Admin,Viewer,Op'n Mgr, Designer - but so far only used to setup and maintain not develop) and <named user> (Roles: Admin,Viewer,Op'n Mgr, Designer). So far only the named user has been developing the jobs ( working absolutely fine) but now a new developer requires access and a further license is 11k so not so attractive!
The new developer has tried logging in as Admin in an attempt to use studio and can see the jobs and connect to the repos etc but get an error "Invalid Administrator Access".
Is it the case that the Admin user should not be used to develop in the studio at all?

Check this Admin should have the designer role in order to have read and write access to projects and jobs for development. Check the link that will have the role required for user in order to access the components
