Version upgrade From Talend Data Management 5.4 to Talend Data Management 6.4

We have decided to upgrade Talend Data Management platform from 5.4 to 6.4 .without impacting current production environment.

I would like to know the following

1. Is there is any best practice to do it ?

2. if there are any challenges for doing the same?

3. Is there any version compatibility issue / or if there are any any obsolete methods ?

4. Is Talend Support Backword compatibility if we upgrade to Java 8. ?

Can any one share the experience for the same.
