sometimes (better, often) you can't read all the data from the source (db, files, etc,.....) because the reload takes too long; storing data in qvd is a convenient way to reduce load window

Simple Question..but difficult to answer.

QVD is Qlikview Proprietory Compressed Data File. You can load the raw Data and store it in compressed QVD file.

You can extract the data from the raw source, transform it and store it as QVD file.

QVDs are not required, you can work with QlikView without ever touching QVDs.

QVDs are used to store the data exported from QlikView, and generally can help with the following scenarios

use as temporary store to increase load speed of data that do not change

reduce load on the database

extract once and use the data in multiple applications

implement incremental load
