Any real world scenarios, non-trivial examples of QlikView for practice ? Or do I have to pay $3000 for those 2-3 day courses

which only teach point and click ?

I think your wording is not correct, but QV it's a great tool easy to use and learn. I do for my self without any trainning but it need a part of your best time.

I recommend to you that by a book, download examples and see what happen.

One can read a 100 manuals to learn how to use this button or that chart. I need some good examples on how about solving a real world/customer problem with qlikview ?

Almost finished doing that tutorial. I don't agree with your answer. There is a difference between learning features of the tool and using the features to solve a slightly complex real world problem.

Thanks for your answer. I almost finished that tutorial. No one/almost no one will hire a person who has done just these tutorials. Similarly, I think one might not get qlik jobs after just doing these tutorials. One needs EXPERIENCE. I feel that it can only come through some real world examples of qlik. Where can I get such examples/scenarios ?

In software development, many/most companies like to see PROJECTS and not just theoretical knowledge. You can finish your web development book end to end, but if you have no project to show, then its hard to get a job/project.

That is why I am interested in getting real world scenarios.

Does this make sense ?

I'll admit that I should have added that I am almost done with the free qlikview tutorials. They are great, but they are only the first step.

Hi John,

For a near real life situation I recommend the book QlikView 11 for Developers written by Miguel Garcia and Barry Harmsen. I think the approach of this book reflects a real world scenario very well. It will suit the next step perfectly.

Also there are some test databases you can use like the MS Access Northwind database.

The community is full of real scenarios. And sometimes, you get a question : I have to do, how do I do ?

Some people have real problems and need help: you may try solving them (even if you take much more time than experts do => that is always the case the 1st time). You will get a problem, and sometimes, the solution !

Hi, John.

What you can do is try and use statistics in the public domain. In the UK there is the Office of National Statistics (ONS) which publishes stats on economy, environment, social changes. The U.N. also does the same sort of thing. You can use these as a basis for building apps to analyse the statistics and identify trends.

Hi John,

There is no better way to gain experience than to find an itch and scratch it. Maybe there is something in your current work or personal life that could benefit from analysis in QlikView?

When I started with QlikView I turned just about anything I could think of into QlikView applications, just a few of my projects from back in the day:

Loading metadata tables from Oracle databases and assessing data quality in those DB's;
Analyzing my email correspondence by extracting data from Outlook;
Personal exercise schedules, setting targets and checking my progress in QlikView;
Loading the data from my Suunto dive computer into QlikView and analyzing dives and dive patterns;
Keeping track of my household's energy consumption and comparing it to data from the Dutch statistics office;
Analyzing my eBay sales, determining optimum 'Buy It Now' pricing.

I'm sure you can come up with similar projects yourself. Find something you want to do and then do it. And of course, if you run into issues, the QlikCommunity is always available to help you out. You'd be surprised by how many questions have already been asked and answered.
