I have an issue whereby an occasional UTF8 character is in a text field and this causes the whole Qlik reload to fail (bringing the data via ODBC). Is there any way to enable Qlikview to be able to handle these characters?

you need UTF8 with BOM.

If you load the data per ODBC from a data-base your issue isn't on the Qlik side else it's the driver which isn't capable to handle utf8. Some drivers could be configured to a certain charset but you may need a different one. The help and/or the community from the driver and your data-base should have the right information for this issue.
