Hi All - I have been running QVS 10 SR1 now for about a month; upgraded from 9 SR5. Since the upgrade I (only) periodically see messages such as the below in the QVS Events log. It seems like it only happens on certain days. The referenced accounts are valid and active; both local accounts on the QVS box or domain accounts. Some days I see a bunch of records like the below; other days none (with the same user accounts accessing documents.

2011-04-12 02:30:05 2011-04-12 09:41:50 2 500 Warning Windows System Info: Failed to translate name QVSVR\username (username@QVSVR) - "Access is denied.
"

Any idea what could be causing this?

Thanks -Isaiah

Reason was that QV identifies users by NTSID (not by NTNAME). When some account expires in Active Directory, it might be reactivated under a different NTSID (but with same name) .Same NTSID is also stored together with in shared bookmarks and objects (the .shared file).

QV 10 shoudl have this fixed ==store only NTNAME . But you might have still .shared files copied form version 9?

-Alex

www.snowflakejoins.com

Hey guys > still having the issue and no resolution. Using 10 SR1. I haven't yet sent this over to QT support.

Interesting is that I don't (think) I see any front-facing issues with this (e.g. users denied access, etc.) I haven't been able to find a strong correlation to when this happens; e.g. a specific document opened in Server, etc. All of the accounts are surely valid and have not been re-created (original SID.) I see a few other messages returned too, like the below:

2011-04-14 06:50:54 2011-04-14 09:00:58 2 500 Warning Windows System Info: Failed to translate name SERVER\ntname (ntname@SERVER) - "The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted."

The messages in quotes are just returned form the OS; in the above example I believe I can attribute to a temporary disconnect between the QVS box and the local domain controller which makes sense. But no idea on the "access denied" messages. Assuming it's legitmate (not just a QV issue) but not sure what is causing (when QVS is trying to translate SID.)

I certainly do have some .shared files left over from QV9 and will try killing those to see if the issue is resolved and post back. But haven't seen the events in a few days now, of course 😃

-Isaiah

This error only signals that the "nice name format" translation, for eg. from "domain\jde" to "John Doe" failed. I will probably only mean that users will see "domain\jde" instead of the real translated name in ownership lists and such. It might also be so in the QEMC/QMC.

It doesn't neccesarily mean that the users are deleted from the AD or such, but for some reason the translation failed. Since the method to do this is a WINAPI function, there's not much Qlikview can do about it - if it fails, something is "wrong" with the user or the AD or the connection to the AD.
