Is it possible to add a variable as a Dimension in a Pivot Table ?

I have one dimension 'Product Sub Group Desc'. I would like to add a dimension, let's call it category, whose value depends on 'Product Sub Group Desc'. It is a value associated to each 'Product Sub Group Desc': if 'Product Sub Group Desc' = ''Beer" then category = Cat1, etc...

To solve this, I thought of having a variable, say vCategory which i define with a long if statement: if 'Product Sub Group Desc' = ''Beer" then category = Cat1, etc... And then to have one dimension in pivot table equalling this variable. Is this an option ?

If I add the variable vCategory as a dimension in Pivot Table, I get no more value in the table. How to proceed ?

Would you advice other ways to solve the issue ?
