KPIs are a huge topic. This is a good book (but by no means the only one) on KPIs

With my clients I always tend to steer them away from the term KPI until they are a good way up the Bi maturity curve. I start them off with basic measures, then targetted measures, before starting to use the term KPI.

Think of a KPI as a simple piece of information that explains the current position and trend of an aspect of an organisation. Simple KPI's can be things like 'Net Profit %', but you can get hideously comvoluted ones like 'Median Process Cycle Times' across business with global divisions and thousands of processes.

key performane indicators , kpi are mostly used when designing dasboards , kpi for a banking are number of clients with gold cards , number with platinum cards , total credit card debt , for insurance can be number of insurance policies sold , number of claims from beginning year to date , number users cancelling policy , number users late with premuim payments ...
