Hope this helps you.

Document properties-->Number tab-->select the field and see the corresponding datatype is checked in the radio button options.

I wish to find out the data type of a column in the script and store it in a field.

There are no data types in QlikView: see Data Types in QlikView from hic‌

There are different presentation of the numeric data, that's it. But you can't even say that a given column is a numeric or a text, because both numeric and string values can be in the same column in QlikView.
