there are many tabs in our customer's application, at least 30. They are starting to cause problems and split up onto the next line, "quishing" some of the objects downward. We would like to rename the tabs, what are the specs, i.e. 1) What are the maximum characters/numbers that a tab may be in length, 2) What special characters are allowed in a tab name, i.e. &, #, _, - ?

The length of the Sheet Title is only limited by the width of your screen - so will depend on the users' resolution.

As far as I am aware there are no limitations on the special characters you can use in the title. Just play with it yourself.

Hi, I don't know the maximum lenght, but with 500 char's it works

and about the char's, also i've used all the standard ascii code and works too, i don't know if in another languagues it's the same (i mean russian or chinese with the symbols)

By the way, you can define group of tabs, with the conditionallity field in every tab, for example you can define a dashboard with buttons and every button change the value of a variable "group", then in the conditionallity put something like if(group = 'Sales',1,0) for the Sales' tab and so on...
