QlikTech unfortunately decided to use the exact same syntax to mean different things depending on context, which I think was a very poor design choice. But regardless, it's what we're stuck with. In set analysis, $1 is indeed the previous selection. But in this context, it indicates the first parameter, $2 the second parameter, and so on.
