Best pratice for layout and visualisation

Hi everyone,

I want to know,what is the best practice to design the application.I am facing a lot of complication while designing the dashboard.I refereed qlikview sample. But I wanted to know how to add a wow effect in the UI.I am very poor in color selection.Please any one has any idea please help me in this.What point and method I should keep in mind before designing the application.
