i have a few questions about ways to create a link table.

* I see some people first creating a tmp link table without any combinate keys. After this, the final link table is created with the combined keys and does a DISTINCT. Whats the benefit of doing this? Pros/Cons?

* I see also people that split there link tables in order to create more compact table with less NULL values. Any pro/cons?
