topic AutoNumber() function - how does it work? in QlikView

Hi,

I've read several times about the AutoNumber() function in QlikView. Just now I came across it again in a post collecting some general hints on performance tuning - to use numeric keyfields between tables instead of STRINGs. I have six tables in my datamodel currently. All of them are connected via some ID-number, which does not say it might not be in STRING format, I don't know.

Is there a way to find that out in QlikView? Finding out what type the field is in the underlying database will be a bit more troublesome.

Second, more important question: What happens if I apply the AutoNumber() function to a keyfield where the table_viewer says "Primary key" or "key", meaning the field is not unique?

Thanks a lot!

Best regards,

DataNibbler
