In join you are creating a table by matching rows by field names.

In ApplyMap you are adding information to a table by smoking up the first matching value in another (the map).

You can check out HIC's document on the matter here: Join and lookups

Oops I almost forgot. In my first blogpost on aqlik.se I wrote about applymap and there i also compared it to the join.

Here is a link to it: aqlik.se - ApplyMap

Join: combine rows from two or more tables, based on a related column between them

ApplyMap: This is a bit like a Vlookup, it will generally take 3 Parameters. With 2 parameters it is quite powerful, but if you use the 3rd parameter it is even more useful.

Great blog on using ApplyMap by Steve Dark

Jones, below are a couple of Design Blog posts that should likely help, I am also going to add a third link that may be a bit much to wrap your head around right now, but it might help a bit too potentially.

https://community.qlik.com/t5/Qlik-Design-Blog/Don-t-join-use-Applymap-instead/ba-p/1467592

https://community.qlik.com/t5/Qlik-Design-Blog/To-Join-or-not-to-Join/ba-p/1463102

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wevhFK_AID8&feature=youtu.be

That last link is a presentation by Henric Cronstrom regarding the QIX Engine, it is about 40 minutes, well worth your time, as I think it will help put you in the right frame of mind when trying to figure out your data models in order to make things as efficient and well performing as possible.

Regards,
Brett
