You have to set a trigger. Check the below link.

Creating a trigger doesn't help in this case as I lose my previous selections on the field. Anything else?

So there are three Triggers.

1. Document Level

This won't work as I need the selections to be saved after I am in the dashboard

2. Field Event Triggers

I can use them but whenever I clear out the Field1, the selections are gone. There is no way getting those selections again into Field1. Please suggest if you know a way.

3. Variable Event Triggers

Same as Field Event Triggers. I can save the selections made on Field1, but when I change to Tab2, the variable needs to be cleared as Tab2 doesn't need Field1 selections. When I go back to Tab1, there is no way I can get those previous selections. Suggest if I can do anything here
