Hi Digvijay,

It looks like you have an option that doesn't appear in my version. I don't have a Y-value option at all. Maybe I missed something that enables that? This explains why I found the text confusing. When I didn't see a sort by Y-value option on the screen, I assumed that they meant Sales since it is the Y axis.

Thanks,

Steve

Working through the tutorial on version 11.20 and can't replicate the sort order change described on p. 70. Followed the steps, and my countries are still sorted in alpha. Checked the TutorialFinal.qvw file to compare the settings to my own and the only difference I see is ascending v descending for the Sales Numeric Value sort order. Even though TutorialFinal.qvw is set to ascending, the sales totals are displayed in descending as well. Am I missing something?

Thanks,

Steve

Hi Shaun,

I attached my working file. From your comment, I think you mean sort should only show 1 column, but I'm not sure how to remove country and it is found in the final. Also, if you look at the final (and I downloaded the copy above to confirm it is the same), the sort shows ascending, but the values are descending.

This is what I have in mine, but as you can see it isn't sorted at all, it appears in alpha by country (which is the first priority, but it is in final as well). I've tired a few things: cleared selects after setting it, promoted Sales priority in front of Country, unchecked sort by text on both columns.

I appreciate all the feedback and look forward to hearing more.

Thanks,

Steve

It gets stranger: I continued through lesson 5 and went back to the table and now it is sorted correctly. I didn't change the parameters. I wonder if something in lesson 5 related to the pivot table creation is actually the reason the sort order changed? Still strange that I don't see the Y-axis option at all. Here's another shot of it working showing that the properties are the same:

I agree. We did find another way to fix this in my co-worker's copy: she added an expression sort on country by sum(sales) and it accomplished the same thing. At least with that approach, you can see why it is working as expected.

Thanks for your help!

Extremely strange, this is what I am greeted with when opening your tutorial properties (see screenshot at the bottom).

It might be a bug, or very outdated version of qlikview, what version are you using?

From your last screenshot, I would suggest in that scenario to move sales to the top priority in the list of 2 by clicking on sales and then clicking "Promote", and removing the sort by text.

Also as a side note, this is a bar chart and not a pivot

Version is 11.2 (SR11), but the tutorial I'm following was downloaded from the link provided on the splash page of this product version as well, which is why I'd be surprised if they weren't in synch. I follow the difference between the pivot and the bar, I was just remarking that I see the Y-value option for pivot tables and do not see it for bars. I also tried to promote Sales as you suggested and that did not work either - in fact, nothing changed at all, which increased my suspicion that what I was seeing is a bug. Based on Digvijay's findings, others seem to have encountered the same thing and apparently by setting the Y-value in a different chart type, the selection is preserved when you switch back to a bar.

In any case, using an Expression sort on country by sum(sales) seems to make the most sense to me. It accomplishes the goal and is very readable for maintenance purposes.
