drill-down in QlikView

Hi,

We're using QlikView version SR2.

If a client hovers a cursor over a particular chart, the symbol 'cursor' doesn't appear (in the attached file I show the example of what I mean).

So it is quite unclear for the end-user that drill-down is possible.

Actually, showing a cursor in all cases when a click is possible is a standard functionality of a web-application. I hope it is somehow possible in QlikView.

Can I make the symbol 'cursor' appear for the charts if drill-down is possible?

I think we have had a SR2 release of most of the 11 versions of QlikView. SR = service release, so next time be sure to include the actual version of QlikView .

About your question:

Changing the cursor with default functionality is, to my knowledge, not possible.

There are a few things that you could do though:

- Add a text object to inform your user that the chart offers drill-down functionality (or something like "select a year to show data of all quarters").

- Add this text to the help text (see Caption tab), so a question mark will show up with this text.

- Add some text in chart (see Presentation tab) with this information

- Explain your users that if the label has an arrow pointing up, selecting in the chart will make them drill down

- Make it obvious by the name of the chart (or sheet)

Hi Onno,

In the attached file you can see my desktop version. Our clients use a web browser to analyse dashboards published on the server.

I can see your point. But it doesn't seem to solve the task. Our clients have very high expectations on visualisation and usability. Actually we try to keep up with the standards which are widespread on the web market. If something is clickable, than a cursor should appear. It is a must.

I can see that QlikView provides the needed functionality in a straight table. If a user hovers over a straight table, then a cursor in a shape of a hand appears. So I can see that QlikView actually can do it.

The point is to make it work not only for a straight table but for a chart as well.

It is quite critical for us. I'm ready to spend my time trying to find a solution.

As far as I know QlikView is compatible with HTML. I was told that in case QlikView lacks a needed visual elements, than HTML might help. Though I haven't tried it.

Can some extra scripting or integrating HTML in QlikView documents help to solve the task?

Hi Larisa

Even if you can do something like that, it won't be easy as it would require HTML5 and JavaScript scripting knowledge.

You can always use something like a suffix in your dimension to show to the Business User that they are dealing with a drill down group.

e.g.

Product DL

Time Drill Down

or even a symbol as name convention

(in Qlik we tend to use > for drill down and < for cyclic groups)

>Time

>Product

...

Please note that you are on QlikView 11.0 SR2. The latest version is 11.2 SR12, so the version you are working on is a few years old.

About your question:

I know you can do some things by digging into the CCS (and probably other files) on the QlikView Web Server (QVWS). How or what is outside of my expertise and I can not guarantee this is possible.

In QlikView you can click on everything. The changed cursor to a cross is even an indication that you can make selections in a chart. I understand that you would like to have a different cursor and I can see how that would be in line with web applications. I suggest you submit that idea as a feature request.

Then do you know qlikview freelancers who could try to solve this task by the means of HTML5 and JavaScript scripting? We might consider it an outsourcing.

If you allow me to be frank, QlikView offers a splendid calculating engine but its visualisation tools are outdated (showing cross instead of a cursor is not clear). I try to understand if we can do something about it and how much it might cost. I'm working for TNS company which cares much about visualization and usability.

Yes, I know that we are using not the latest QV-version. But as far as I understand you, even the latest version doesn't solve my task.

Submitting a feature request is a nice idea, but we need a kind of solution now.

If visualization is the main topic of your customer, consider Qlik Sense.

If you can let me know which country you (and your customer) are operating in, I can see what I can do for consultant names.

I know that Qlik Sense is a nicer tool. But we don't buy it yet.
