Multiple Answers in one cell

I have multiple answers in a cell all separated by commas and I need to count how many are in the cell how do I count them ? I can't fix this in the excel spread sheet (part of the requirement). I have this problem for many rows.

May be this

SubStringCount(FieldName, ',') + 1

What is the +1 for though?

My guess is that you will have one less separator (comma) than the actual values you are separating... so I am counting the number of commas and then adding 1 to it
