Options To Secure Externally Accessible Instance

We are a Microsoft shop running a Qlik Sense on Windows instance that we manage and is hosted in AWS.  It is externally accessible to a distributed work force without VPN.  We want to secure it more than we already have, and continue to allow it to be externally accessible while not requiring a VPN connection.  I'm looking for ideas on how others have secured their instances so that we can implement more layers of security, if they are available to us.
