What are the recommendations around hosting the Repository database for PostgreSQL using Cloud SQL vs a Compute Engine?

Hi All,

We are planning to deploy Qlik Sense windows environment in Google cloud platform and hosting it in publicly. Would any one help me below my questions?

  1. What are the recommendations around hosting the Repository database for PostgreSQL using Cloud SQL vs a Compute Engine?  If we consider Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL, what are the recommendations around dealing with automated patching in case of incompatible patches?
  2. What are the best recommendations for file share storage i.e. Netapp SMB/NFS vs compute engine?

Thanks & Regards,

Brahma

Thank you @QFabian for replying.

Yes I checked that mentioned post but I heard from GCP specialist that Cloud SQL upgrades cannot be rescheduled more than once. That would mean if a update becomes available for PostgreSQL and the Qlik Sense database was incompatible with the PostgreSQL version this could cause an application outage, and rollback would not be possible. In this case how can we proceed?

Thanks & Regards,

Brahma

Hello @Brahmaiahachari

PostgreSQL is an open-source product, and our testing would be primarily on the open-source edition or equivalent implementations. Our system requires certain PostgreSQL version, so it is important that the managed service has implemented the required main version (currently 9.6.x or 11.x) and that they provide the same functionality as the open-source edition.

Maybe the question should be asked the other way around, does GCP implement the native PostgreSQL server with all capabilities? If not, what have they changed?

And then go from there.
