Do bookmarks work the same between QlikView and Qlik Sense?

For the most part, the key aspect of bookmarking works the same. It’s just a matter of how to go ahead and configure the bookmarks. The Qlik Sense option for ‘Save sheet location’ will cause the bookmark to be active as soon as you open the app, like using an ‘on open trigger’ in QlikView. The next step to make it behave like QlikView, is to make the bookmark is set to Default.

Having the bookmark active on specific sheets is also possible. Edit the sheet and go to ‘Actions’. Pick ‘Apply Bookmark’ and select the bookmark. This will set the bookmark to open automatically when that sheet is opened.

One thing that is important to highlight is that a lot of QlikView folks share bookmarks. It’s a very important feature from a community perspective because people can create bookmarks and share them. If you drop down on the bookmark tab and right click on a bookmark, you can publish the bookmark. On your system it will show as “Bookmarks published by me” but for other users it will show as a community bookmark.

Public bookmarks in Qlik Sense equate to a Document bookmark in QlikView and bookmarks published by the community or others are a server shared bookmark.

Creating charts is very flexible in QlikView. We can control almost every aspect of the chart from the axis to the labels to the fonts. Will these options ever be available in Qlik Sense?

From a roadmap and functionality perspective, we have added a lot of controls over the last 9 months or so. There are over 100 improvements that have gone into to Qlik Sense. Some of those are containers, show/hide, triggers, actions, change fonts, apply themes, change colors, and do layers. Geo visualizations will allow you to create layers on a map. So, you have a map and a pie chart on cities. So, there is a lot of complexity you can build into your Qlik Sense visualizations. There is a showcase app that includes examples that go really deep into it.

Some of the things that you cannot do in Qlik Sense that you could do in QlikView are, for example, layer visualizations on top of one another, unless you use a container. You can use a container to do the same thing, where you have multiple visualizations and show/hide but you can’t really layer them on top. The reason for that is responsive design. If you think about it technically, it’s very hard to sort of scale that up or down responsibly but you can achieve the same thing. We are making a lot of investment and you will see more of that over the next few months.

If there is a feature that you would like to see in Qlik Sense that is in QlikView, please search in the Ideas board and either vote or create an idea for the enhancement.

In most of the QlikView development many QlikView developers have used the Binary loads, how do we migrate that, because what is recommended by Qlik is not to use the Binary loads in Qlik Sense.

You can use binary load in Qlik Sense. It is documented in the Help. It is not recommended to use the binary file of the application for the binary load. When a binary reload is done against the binary file, it creates a lock. The engine also tries to hold the application and requires a lock. So everything is locked down and the reload will fail or cause other issues which is why we do not recommend it. In general, binary loads are fine as long as you follow the instructions that are on the Help.

What is the migration path for QlikView to QlikSense for qvw, qvw, qvs?

We do have a converter tool. The help gives detailed instructions how you can utilize the tool to convert from QVW to QVF and will also give you the limitations.

There is also the Governance Dashboard that you can run through your documents prior to using the converter tool. It is an amazing tool that will show you how many documents are being used on a regular basis. It will also give you a conversion score that will tell you how likely are you able to convert this properly to Qlik Sense. You will see things like this document was never used so I don’t need to convert it. But I would highly recommend running through the QlikView Governance Dashboard. It has this really good metric tool and then going over to the QlikView Converter which will bring in all of your variables, master dimensions, expressions etc. It’s a much better way of moving from QlikView to Qlik Sense than to just do a binary load off of QlikView. Because with the binary load, you will get the data model yes, but you will lose all of your dimensions and measures which will actually convert over into a QVF.

We have these tools out here to try to make it easier for you but if there is anything that you need assistance, please let your Account Manager know. They can get you the appropriate resources to help you get these documents converted.

When a customer transfers from QV -> QS with perpetual licenses with AMP 30% 1 year Subscription, will the customers lose the perpetual licenses after 1 year?

 If you have QlikView, we apply a flat uplift and we convert you over to Qlik Sense. Now you don’t give up your QlikView rights, you basically get additional rights to use Qlik Sense and you keep QlikView. So you basically have double the fun. However, you have two options. You can do client managed, which means that you keep your perpetual rights and keep everything on prem or you can do subscription and SaaS. With subscription, you are giving up perpetual rights but you’re also getting the value of a three-year lock in It is your choice to remain on Perpetual or move to Subscription. There is more flexibility on Subscription, since you can move to SaaS deployment, which will dramatically reduce your TCO. We do have a TCO calculator that can help you make this decision. Please reach out to your Account Manager for more information on the program as well as for the TCO calculator.

We highly recommend converting to subscription because with COVID, etc we see a lot of customers with work from home situations. So, it’s a great offer for customers who want to enable work from home. You don’t have to fight with firewalls, etc. So, subscription and SaaS is a great offer for customers.

With the program, do I have a time limit to migrate from QlikView to Qlik Sense?

You do not have a time limit to migrate from QlikView to Qlik Sense. You don’t even have to migrate. We are not a requiring a migration. We would like you to adopt the program take advantage and start using Qlik Sense and adopt at your own pace. So that's one of the key tenants of the program is that You can continue using your QlikView apps, as you have been and start using Qlik Sense and see the value it provides as you go, you may want to do some migrations. That is your choice and you can modernize as you wish.

I am looking for some help to understand the behaviour of Bar chart auto adjust axis while we move scroll. This is working for only few cases. Let me know if you can help me understand this.

We would need some more clarity. If you have not, please try posting the question to the Qlik Community on the New to Qlik Sense board or App Development board. When posting to the boards, please try to include as much information as possible like version of Qlik Sense, description of the behavior, and illustrate with screenshots, a sample app, GIF or video. You mentioned a video, so please try posting that (so long as there is not any sensitive data) so we, along with the Qlik Community, can try to help.

In SaaS model, which cloud vendor we need choose?

In the SaaS model, you do not need to choose a cloud vendor because it’s a Qlik managed offering. When you sign up for Qlik Sense Enterprise SaaS edition, it’s five minutes from clicking on the button to fire up a tenant to actually having a tenant. We manage everything in the background. We don’t reveal the cloud vendor we use but we have agreements in place so you don’t have to worry about spinning up VMs or spinning up an Azure instance. If you want to know for compliance reasons, please talk to your Sales representative and they can provide documents to show how we are compliant with the requirements. Also, Trust and Compliance at Qlik has more information.

Having said that, you can always host Qlik Sense Enterprise in your own environment. You can spin up an Amazon instance or an Azure instance or in a VM. Qlik Sense Enterprise is also listed under Amazon. So it’s available as a machine instance that you can purchase with Amazon credits.

If you develop all your expressions in Variables and only use $(expand) in the chart expressions.  What do you suggest for Qlik Sense?  Seems to me that these definitions should move into Master Items and drop the Variables.

Master items are there for end user experience : drag/drop on personal sheets in a governed app . But there are a lot of other use cases for variables besides that which is why you often keep your variables. You can keep the variables and reference the variable in the master item.

Is it possible for customers who are on QV local client to use AMP?

Anyone with a QlikView site can join the Analytics Modernization Program. What we’ll do is take a look at what your QlikView site looks likes and we will give you entitlement to Qlik Sense for all of your QlikView users. That can be either on SaaS or our client managed offering. You basically adopt Qlik Sense along with QlikView, if you so choose, to expand your analytics and can adopt at your own pace. You don’t have to migrate. You can continue using QlikView and get started on utilizing Qlik Sense for a greater return on investment or greater savings and total cost of ownership. You don’t have to worry about recreating the data layer components within Qlik Sense that call all be reused. For more information on AMP and your options, please reach out to your Account Manager.

How can we convince our stakeholders to move from QlikView to QlikSense? They are concerned about redevelopment effort in addition to existing duties.

There are a few ways to approach this. First of all, talk to us. Reach out to your Account Manager, they will help talk you through the benefits and help sell the idea internally. Some of the benefits top of mind are you have Augmented Intelligence, people want to self-serve and people are moving more to mobile. Qlik Sense can help you with all of that. You also reduce the cost of ownership. When you move from QlikView to Qlik Sense, and in particular Qlik Sense in SaaS, you can now decommission all of the QlikView nodes that you have for your consumers. You will keep the publisher on prem, you still have that cost, but 80% of the cost you have on premise is going to be the QlikView nodes for consumers. You can now offload all of that on a subscription basis, over to SaaS. The best part is, you don’t have to move. You don’t really have to do redevelopment until it fits your timeline. You can move at your own pace. But you get the benefit of the newer analytics while continuing to work on things that you’re used to. Talk to your sales team and that will work with you on this.

How do I implement a 3-tier architect (Extract/transform, Data Model, presentation) in Qlik Sense?

One of the difference we have found is with the reload failures. In QlikView, we are able to receive notations by email thought the QMC.  We have not found a good solution in Qlik Sense.

There is not a native solution at this time but we do have an article with multiple solutions. You can use Qlik Alerting, SMTPAppender, Qlik SMTP or a third party developed tool.

Qlik Sense SaaS does have alerting embedded. It has web notifications as well as email notifications.

Do we have any cost benefit for AMP if we have on prem systems on both Qlikview and Qlik Sense? Is the 30 percent uplift on maintenance renewals?

The standard program is 30% uplift on the annual QlikView maintenance price, however, we recommend that you get in contact with your Account Manager and what your options are. You have the ability to take either SaaS or client managed and depending on the configuration you have, depending on your maintenance cost, your rep will work with you to get you what you need. If really depends on the size of your Qlik Sense estate, if you have 5000 Qlik Sense users, AMP might not be as cost effective for you. But in a lot of cases, even if you already have Qlik Sense, we encourage you to work with yours Sales team because the cost equation might workout in your favor. And yes, the 30% uplift is normally on your QlikView maintenance. If you decide to switch subscription, that maintenance amount will become the annual subscription so that’s important to note.

If a customer already has QV Value Added Products like NPrinting and wants to transfer to QS. Will the VAP be transferred to QS or what will happen?

Most of our value-added products and the only exception I can think of is Qlik Connectors, but most of our value added products are offered in a manner that they connect to QlikView and Qlik Sense. NPrinting, for example, you have the ability to use both products. There are exceptions where you only have the right to connect to one product but we have offers out there to help with that as well. Please reach out to Account Manager for more information.

Is the ability to consume QlikView documents in Qlik Sense hub also available for internal private cloud as opposed to SaaS?

You can link your QlikView documents within a private cloud environment. So if you have a private cloud or even an on-prem environment, instead of actually distributing the document you can publish a link or distribute a link. In that case, what happens is the user actually sees everything in one place in the Qlik Sense Hub. For them, it’s the same experience. But when they click on the QlikView document, it’s actually a URL that goes back and opens it on the QlikView server in a separate tab. So from that perspective, the architecture is slightly different. You get essentially the same result. If you’re specifically looking for the ability to actually host the document within the same engine, that is only offered on SaaS. The reason for that is, if you think about it from a cost perspective, it doesn’t make sense for us to physically move the document from one infrastructure to the other infrastructure, if you own both infrastructures. So that use case makes sense when you’re moving it from an on-prem infrastructure to cloud infrastructure. If referencing an implementation with Kubernetes that is internal or private, it would be possible to send the documents.

How do we handle the QlikView publisher task while moving to Qlik Sense, Specifically the loop and reduce functionality?

First of all, you don’t have to touch them. You keep them as is and let them do their thing and just distribute the documents over to the target. Now, if you want to move those tasks over to Qlik Sense and you want to do all of that in Qlik Sense, then yes, loop and reduce is not available there. It’s something we have in the roadmap. In fact, the whole QlikView to Qlik Sense thing actually opens up an interesting possible solution. I don’t want to say it’s the recommended solution but you can use the publisher to do loop and reduce and then consume them in Qlik Sense by loading it in Qlik Sense. It is a slightly more complicated solution. From a product perspective, we are looking at loop and reduce and how we can support that use case. It’s not quite there yet.

Is SaaS model, can we choose cloud vendor? The reason I am asking, all of our data going into AWS. If Qlik choose Azure, we need to pay data transfer from AWS to Azure.

We cannot reveal who we work with from a cloud perspective, so I would encourage you to reach out to your account team. Having said that, you always have the choice of spinning up a private cloud environment in Azure or AWS. In your particular case, I would encourage you to reach out to your account team to have a more comprehensive discussion.

Also, to clarify, the private cloud option is client managed deployment. The SaaS deployment is our cloud and when you choose to deploy in your own cloud, that is the client managed option because you’re managing that on your dime and your own site.

What training is available for Qlik Sense?

We have a variety of different offerings for support. Some are free, some are paid. When it comes to the consulting, we have a broad swath of services. They really look into your environment and do assessments and there’s actually an option for the delivery of redesigned QlikView apps to migration services to Qlik Sense. We also have a variety of training courses on getting you up to speed with Qlik Sense quickly. Some are self-paced and we’ve lifted the cost of those for our Qlik Continuous Classroom.

When it comes to Support, you’re already a customer so there is no cost to you. So, we have our Community discussion groups and our blogs. We have the QlikView to Qlik Sense community group which I recommend everybody visit. The resources for Support, of course, our 24/7 support and then you can sign on to Signature Success.

If you go to the Qlik Continuous Classroom, there are a lot of resources. A lot. There’s an amazing amount of free training available. Anyone who uses any Qlik product, whether it’s data integration or data analytics, you should absolutely be looking at the Learning portal. There are literally hundreds of hours of free content available and particularly, if you go to Continuous Classroom, there is a specific QlikView to Qlik Sense course module available. It’s offered for new Qlik Sense users as well as Advanced or Beginners. You can see similarities between the products, how do you load data. This is all written from the perspective of QlikView customers and partners who use QlikView and know the product and moving over to Qlik Sense.

Is there anyway to migrate Section Access Script automatically using the QlikView Convertor?
QlikView and Qlik Sense Section Access is bit different QV Vs QS, so it depends how your SA is created. Please see Manage Security with Section Access for more information.

What does licensing look like for existing on-prem services, can we use both on-prem and cloud at the same time?

Please reach out to your Account Manager to discuss all the options. Depending on what products you’re referring to you, it may be possible to use on-prem and cloud.
