During a Qlik Gold Client export or import, you receive errors such as DATASET_READ_ERROR or DATASET_NOT_OPEN. The error also generates an ABAP dump viewable in transaction ST22. The ABAP dump shows an error when reading, opening, or writing to a file. This typically means there is an issue with the directory configured for Gold Client use. The configured directory can be found in transaction FILE for logical path /HTG/GC by selecting Assignment of Physical Paths to Logical Path

The first place to check is in transaction ZGOLD - Configuration - Administration - Installation/Setup. Execute utility Setup Confirmation. For items Write to File, Read From File, and Authorization to ZGOLD, are they successful? If so, the directory is configured properly and directory permissions are in place.

Another cause of this error is lack of space in the configured directory. Perhaps some large exports were executed, and the file sizes are at the space limit set for the directory. When it tries to create a new file or append to an existing one, the failure occurs. A member of your Basis or infrastructure team can check this. If space is the issue, additional space could be allocated to the directory. If space is not available or if it will take time to allocate more, a temporary solution is to remove unneeded Gold Client files. This can be accomplished a few ways:

  • In Gold Client, we do not have a way to schedule a routine job, but export files can be deleted manually. In any non-Production system, go to ZGOLD - Import Control. Remove the File Creation Date and press Enter. This removes the default filter which limits exports from the past month only. To see files created by all users, remove the value in field User who ran Export and press Enter. Select any unneeded exports and click button Delete Files. This removes all files associated with that export. If there are any old ones you no longer need, you can use this method. You can select multiple exports and delete many at once, but keep in mind that the more files that are selected and the larger these files are, the longer it will take to run the deletion.  You may face session time out errors from SAP by selecting too many at once.

  • Gold Client has a utility to remove any "stranded" files. By this we mean any files that were created during a failed job that are essentially orphaned files. Go to ZGOLD - Configuration - Administration - Reports & Cleanup Utilities and execute utility Stranded Files Cleanup. Keep the default and click Execute. This will find any files associated from failed jobs, and you can delete them. It will give you a warning not to execute it while you have any exports running. The utility would view export jobs in progress as “stranded” files since they are not yet completed and remove them.

  • There are other ways to manage space outside of Gold Client. As part of your operating system or storage maintenance, your Basis or infrastructure team could create an automated job to routinely delete files after X number of days. This does not allow selectivity like the manual deletion in Gold Client, but if older files are not needed, this is an efficient way of doing it.

If the directory is correctly configured, permissions are good, and the space is available, another item to check is the file system mount. The FILE path configuration may be correct, but if the directory is not mounted, errors will occur because the directory cannot be accessed. If using multiple application servers, if all can be used by Gold Client, all should be mounted.

If the issue remains after checking the above, please open a support case (www.qlik.com/community-support-cases) to discuss further.
