Migrating Qlik Sense from an older version to newer version

Hi Qlikers,

I am planning out the migration for my Qlik Sense Enterprise server to a new server. I want to take the opportunity to upgrade the Qlik Sense version too, since it is quite outdated (May 2022 p2), to the latest stable version in Feb 2023.

My question is - is it fine to backup my current version, and directly restore it in the newest version during my migration? What are the possible issues/errors I will face by doing this?

I was reading this article - https://community.qlik.com/t5/Support-Updates/Qlik-Sense-Migration-Migrating-your-Entire-Qlik-Sense/...

And one warning in the page mentioned:

user467341_0-1683502806145.png

But in this YouTube video (Migrate Qlik Sense Enterprise Like A Boss), the answer to the first question in the FAQ mentioned it is fine to upgrade directly. - https://youtu.be/ea7AsrREiYA?t=2226

What is the correct approach and possible pitfalls?

Thanks.

Great @user467341 ,

Yes, please download May 2022 from the download site.

The version as it is still support is available there, please ensure you select All release and all patches on the Release Assets field.

Hello @user467341,

If you migrate Postgres version to 12 using our tool QPI (Qlik PostgreSQL Installer) from below article, then it's normal that Qlik Sense Repository Database service inactive.
It's replaced by another service called postgresql-x64-12 as you already specified.

From the article below, before to migrate Qlik Sense to another version, it's very important to performance the last step, otherwise you'll have some issue.

https://community.qlik.com/t5/Official-Support-Articles/Upgrading-Qlik-Sense-Repository-Database-fro...

Last step is to uninstall to old qlik service.

But in your case I understand you want to proceed in another way, meaning install Qlik Sense from scratch in another server and then restore the Postgres DBs backup in this new server.

In that case the step you mentionned (Finalizing the upgrad/uninstalling the old DB service) is to be ignored. This step is only when after you have upgraded the Qlik Sense Postgres version from 9.6 to 12 (Using QPI) and when you are upgrading this Qlik Sense version to a new version.

So your steps would be like that:

Migrating from current version to the same version in new server (May 2022 P2)

  1. Download and install Qlik Sense Enterprise May 2022
  2. Download and upgrade Qlik Sense Enterprise May 2022 to patch 2
  3. Perform a backup from old environment (as you have migrated Postgres with QPI, you will perform the backup using postgresql-x64-12 service and not Qlik Sense Repository Database as it should be uninstalled)
  4. Restore the backup in the new environment (as it's a new installation, Potgres version 12 is installed and it using Qlik Sense Repository Database service)
  5. Validate and test the newly installed Qlik Sense in new server

    Regards,
    Benoit

Hello @user467341,

Thanks for posting.

If I understood well the question is for upgrades and not migration, on the video.

Hence, I would advise restoring the database to the same version from where it was backup to avoid possible issues.

I would strongly recommend to have a loo at Upgrading Qlik Sense Repository Database from Post... - Qlik Community - 1934238 too.

Cheers,

Albert

Hi Albert,

Thanks for your reply. After rewatching the video, you are right, it is talking about update and not migration (my bad).

Currently, my QS is on May 2022 P2, and is already using the Postgres 12.5. I have the postgresql-x64-12 service runnning, with Qlik Sense Repository Database being inactive (but still in the service).

So if I understood correctly, I will need to download the installer for May 2022 Qlik Sense Server?

The download page does not have this version anymore, is it possible to get this installer via e-mail to QS support?

Thanks!

Hi Albert,

Thanks for your fast reply. Silly me!

Could you confirm if these steps are correct if I am planning for the migration:

Migrating from current version to the same version in new server (May 2022 P2)

  1. Download and install Qlik Sense Enterprise May 2022
  2. Download and upgrade Qlik Sense Enterprise May 2022 to patch 2
  3. Restore the backup (Qlik Sense Repository Database still remains inactive since version is the same)
  4. Validate and test the newly installed Qlik Sense in new server

According to https://community.qlik.com/t5/Official-Support-Articles/Upgrading-Qlik-Sense-Repository-Database-fro... the last part states

user467341_0-1683536805198.png

What does this means exactly? After restoring the back-up in my new server, in version May 2022 P2, if I want to upgrade this to Feb 2023 version, then I have to perform this step? Does this apply if I want to upgrade from May 2022 P2 to May 2022 P3?

Opened a new post for the question

https://community.qlik.com/t5/Deployment-Management/Migrate-Qlik-Sense-to-a-new-server-running-highe...

Hi,

I'm trying to move Qlik Sense to a new server, installed May 2022 and noticed that the clean install is running 12.5 and the old is 9.6
What steps do I have take to move this environment succesfully?
Upgrade the old environment first to the latest version and then move?

@p_verkooijen  I would be best to open a new post so we do not mix topics, you can ping me and @Benoit_C there if you still need advise on this topic.

Cheers,

Albert
