qlik sense UI problem: where is the variables panel?

The variables panel button is not where it should be.  The x= does not appear in any mode on my screen.  I have full access privleges to the application on the Qlik server.  Any troubleshooting clues?

Yes.  That's the Icon I'm missing.....  Nothing but grey space.

i have an idea,

create a varibale in script and look at on the UI if you have this panel

The variables button is only available when you open the app from Work stream, that is on a not published app.

That is when standard security rules are used.
