Can Master Items (Dimensions & Measures) be referenced in an expression ?

I have a master dim that needs to be used in other widgets and inside other expressions. I reference it using the format [my master dim] inside an expression and the parser gives me a (not found) error.

As far as I know you cannot add a Master Dim to an expression.

If it is Single Dim and not Drill down Dim then why not use that single Dim instead of adding Master to expression?
