Trapped into the same with the Qlik Connector Package. The reason that it cannot connect to SQLEXPRESS is not the package but the fact, that MS SQL Server Express has TCP/IP Connections turned off by default. Do this from the SQL Server Configuration Manager:

then set the port for TCP/IP connections

Along with the suggestions above, the server value should be the same that you see in the SQL Managament Studio, if see something like SQLEXPRESS\<Instance name>  it needs to be provided the same way.

It would help if you could indicate what are the errors that you see to clarify where the issue relies.
