Calculate previous sum without variable

Hi Guys,

I want to achieve the same without the use of variable, what I am doing here is that I am displaying balance (sum of values before 1st of each month e.g. for Jan 2014 before balance = sum of all all values < 1 Jan 2014). Closing is the sum of all column values and closing value (of Jan) will go in the 1st cell of Feb and so on.

Actually the 1st value is calculated through a variable and if I directly put the formula in the expression I don't get the desired result. Can you please explain how it can be done without variable.
