QlikView and Qlik Sense are Qlik’s two popular products in the business intelligence software market. Both platforms are built on the same, patented framework: the Qlik Associative Engine,  which offers powerful aggregation and on-the-go calculations that simplify data exploration.

QlikView: QlikView is primarily a guided analytics solution. It allows users to drill down into, analyze and navigate data to explore questions and answers based on what’s been built for them by an application developer. It’s ideal for business marketers who want prepared business apps for data analytics. The charts, layouts and data models are integrated, so users can focus on data drill down and navigation from the get-go.

Qlik Sense: Qlik Sense is more a self-service data discovery tool that gives corporate marketers the freedom to create their own applications and visualizations. It comes with a drag-and-drop interface that makes it easy for users to create interactive and flexible visualizations. Most users want a solution that doesn’t restrict them to templated charts. With Qlik Sense, they can create visuals that tell a story without worrying about all the design elements that a data analytics app developer would think about.

QlikView enables users to build applications with embedded analytics, but users need to know Qlik-specific development skills. Qlik Sense, on the other hand, is more flexible when it comes to embedding analytics in external applications.

Qlik Sense has a responsive design, enabling users to develop reports and visualizations that are optimized for either desktop or mobile viewing, while QlikView does not.

Compatibilities:

  • QlikView Expression, Script Language 99% intact/portable to QlikSense.
  • Green, white, gray selection logic intact.
  • Uses same analysis/calculation engine as QV – same response time.
  • QlikView objects can be copied to QlikSense Desktop.
  • QVD’s, QVW can be loaded into QlikSense platform – QVW files get converted to QVF extension.
  • QlikSense ability to influence a system is all load scripts, aggregations from QlikView.

QlikView is our first-generation BI solution that drove the shift in the market away from large, IT-driven, stack-based technologies to more agile data discovery approaches, kicking-off the data analytics revolution. With our one-of-a-kind Associative Engine, customers readily adopted QlikView to solve business problems because it allowed them to rapidly create highly interactive dashboards and analytics apps without dependence on stack technology. Over two decades, QlikView has driven tremendous value for customers of all shapes and sizes, across all major industries and geographies.

In 2014, we introduced Qlik Sense, our next-generation platform for modern analytics.  It supports the full range of analytics use cases across an organization — including governed self-service, centralized dashboards and applications, natural language conversational analytics, custom and embedded analytics, mobile analytics, and reporting.   It runs on the same Associative Engine as QlikView, but includes a new Cognitive Engine for AI-enabled insight suggestions, automation, and natural language processing.  And it does this within a governed, multi-cloud architecture available in combinations of SaaS, private cloud and on-premises deployments.

For new Qlik customers, there is no longer the need to perform a comparison between the products – we recommend Qlik Sense.  And for our existing customers, you should feel confident in the continued use and support QlikView, while considering Qlik Sense for new use cases and applications.  We have a program now available that makes it easy and economical for you to bring Qlik Sense on-board, modernize your architecture, and consume your existing QlikView apps through Qlik Sense Enterprise SaaS.
