You could try to adjust the search-options within the listbox (tab general) to disable the search in excluded values and to disable the associatve search and maybe further options like show alternative values, ignore locking and so on. But if this didn't sped up enough you might need to restrict the available amount of data with further selections on other fields or an additionally categorizing to these field.
