What are ABAP and SAP?

What are SAP and ABAP? I searched and got a bunch of different acronyms that don't quite make sense.

  • Is SAP a database engine?
  • Is ABAP a programming language?
  • Or are they nothing of that nature?

What are they primarily used for?

Thank you,

Johny

hi johny

abap is Advanced Business Application Programming

which is a programming language used in SAP ERP to create tables,fields..etc

you can compare it with SQL used in Oracle or SQL Server in similar way.

SAP is system applications and products.

it is a ERP software which consists of so many number of modules.

these modules are just like each software helps business to maintain,manage,...etc.

for example SAP Business objects is a module used for reporting purpose.

SAP HANA is a module helps to do data modelling.

SAP Data services helps to do ETL.

all above mentioned tools will come under SAP

When comparing to the Oracle ecosystem, ABAP is more like PL/SQL+FORMS+... in that this single language allows you to create entire forms-based applications, reports, table generators, user-defined exits and whatever else you want to expand the SAP core feature set with.

I'll add on to the end of this that QlikView/Qlik Sense can connect to SAP and SAP BW (Business Warehouse). You can either connect to SAP BW using ODBC, although I think there are a few steps to this, or using the paid-for Qlik SAP Connector you can connect directly to the SAP database using a variety of methods..
