Loyola Institute of Business Administration (LIBA), a Business School in Chennai, India was established in 1979. It’s a well respected business school, and best known for imparting high quality management education.
LIBA offers a two-year full-time Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM), approved by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE). It also offers a part-time PGDM, a Ph.D program and Executive Diploma programs. The PGDM program offers a specialization in Business Analytics under which they teach relevant topics and leading technologies in analytics, with a focus on enhancing the employability of students.
In pursuit of providing students with advanced technologies in analytics, LIBA registered for the Qlik Academic Program to leverage resources such as free Qlik Sense software, online training in both Qlik and analytical theories as well as free qualifications
In their PGDM program (Business Analytics) in term four, LIBA offers a Business Data Visualization subject, and this year they included courses from the Qlik Academic Program. Since knowledge of self-service analytics is an important skill in business studies, utilizing the free resources of the academic program presented them with a great opportunity to learn analytics.
LIBA structured 3 hours of classroom learning with 3 course credits which included topics such as “Introduction to Qlik Sense”, Creating Charts” and “Building Applications”. After this classroom learning, students embarked on projects to gain practical insights and applications in data analytics to cement their knowledge further.
In their bid to continue this journey , these students are now exploring the possibility of preparing for the Business Analyst qualification offered under the academic program. Professor Dr. M Ramasubramaniam who led this initiative at LIBA also has plans to offer the Qlik Academic Program to the Executive Diploma in Management students next year.
In its mission to create a data literate world, one student at a time, this partnership with LIBA holds great promise for the program. If you are a student or professor at an accredited University and you would also like to take advantage of the Qlik Academic Program resources please apply today at qlik.com/academicprogram.
The Academic Program has been on the road in the UK again, and this time we delivered 7 sessions over 6 consecutive days, across 4 different Universities. As a direct result of these presentations we have had nearly 300 new students sign up to become members of the Academic Program, enabling them to take advantage of free Qlik software, training resources and qualifications.Management students at Liverpool experience Qlik for the first timeAt both Sheffield and Liverpool University we ran sessions within the Management Schools for a variety of classes including Management Masters students and MBA students. Also at Sheffield, we presented to undergraduate and post graduate marketing classes and provided them with specific examples of how analytics can be used within the marketing function.Presenting Qlik to students at Sheffield Management SchoolAt Birmingham City University (BCU) I delivered a session on “Preparing for the data driven world with Qlik.” This session was part of Graduate+ Week. Graduate+ is an extracurricular awards framework, open to all students at BCU to complement their degree. The Qlik Academic Program has now been introduced as part of this award framework, so that upskilling in Qlik counts towards gaining the Graduate+ Award too. We had students from a great range of subject areas in attendance, from computer science to marketing to sound engineering. Finally, at Newcastle University we held a workshop for a Data Science MSc class. As well as getting the students hands on with Qlik Sense, we also had some excellent discussion around the importance of data story telling. We talked about how essential it is for data scientists and analysts to be able to communicate their findings from data in an understandable and impactful way to key decision makers throughout the business.Data Science MSc Students in their Qlik workshopOn reflection after this busy week or so, one thing that struck me is the diversity of Universities, students and subjects that we are working with. All of them have different experience, perspectives and motives for working with data. But one view that seemed to be shared by many participants in the sessions, was the importance of data in the modern workplace. There seemed to be a great understanding that gaining insights from data can lead to many positives at all levels of an organisation. Thanks to this way of thinking, many students that we spoke to were keen to gain the free qualifications offered by the Academic Program, so that they can showcase their skills within Qlik to future employers. We’re really looking forward to hearing how the students progress with this over the coming months. If you are a University student or academic and you are interested in finding out more or joining the Academic Program, please visit: qlik.com/academicprogram.

At the end of October, I headed to Bath and Warwick University to introduce students to the Qlik Academic Program and to highlight the importance of data literacy for their future careers. For the visit to Warwick, I had great support from Marius Popa and Mike O’Shea from our pre-sales team. We presented to over 70 students studying for an MSc in Management Information Systems and Digital Innovation in the Management School. Dr Markos Zachariadis who runs the Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence module has been involved with the Qlik Academic Program for several years and is a strong supporter of getting students hands on with industry leading tools in the classroom. As well as giving students an introduction to the importance of Data Analytics in the modern workplace we also showed demos of how Qlik Sense is used across a range of organisations. From there students then had the opportunity to get hands on and build their first application in Qlik Sense. Since running the workshop, to date we have had 69 students from Warwick sign up to the Academic Program, so they will now be able to take advantage of our wealth of learning resources. The following day, we headed to the University of Bath for the fourth year running. This time Julie Main and Kevin Alty from the pre-sales team joined me to deliver the session for the MSc in Business Analytics course. Güneş Erdoğan, Director of studies for the MSc Business Analytics Programme is our main contact at Bath and has been working with the Qlik Academic Program since 2016. After introducing students to Qlik Sense we set them a challenge of making recommendations on what Netflix should include in their 2020 catalogue, based on historic movie data. All groups made great presentations and as well as presenting their findings within Qlik Sense, the students also discussed the challenges and learning points that they had encountered throughout the session. Many now plan to use the e-learning resources available in the Qlik Continuous classroom to further improve their skills in Qlik Sense, so that they can use it for upcoming project work.If you are a University student or Academic and would like to get access to our free Academic Program, sign up today! qlik.com/academicprogram

I had the opportunity to visit Lovely Professional University (LPU) on 28 September, located in the Northern Indian state of Punjab.
LPU is India’s largest private University spread across 600 acres of land and with more than 25000 students on its campus. LPU offers several programs including science, engineering, pharmacy, hotel management and business. The campus is located in a scenic area surrounded by farmlands.
LPU organized a workshop on Data Analytics with a hands-on session in Qlik Sense which was conducted by its faculty, Professor Manikant Roy from the School of Computer Application. This session was attended by over 50 Professors from different schools as mixed as the School of Business, School of Agriculture, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering. Truly, this is indicates that data analytics is an important skill set that needs to be acquired by Professors and students from diverse faculties.
I was invited to deliver the key note address which included a presentation on the three waves in business intelligence and how Qlik is positioned firmly to leverage the third wave of BI, democratization of data. Along with that, I explained the resources available under the academic program such as the online training, qualifications and certifications, analytics curriculum and how Professors and students can take benefit from these resources to enable themselves in analytics. There was a considerable amount of interest on the academic program and its features and so far, 37 LPU Professors have enrolled into the program
This first major engagement of LPU with the Academic Program was a great success. University officials are now planning to strengthen the relationship by enrolling more students into the program along with the possibility of setting up a Centre of Excellence in Analytics.
