NPrinting 17 - how to import filters with fields using different connections

Hi everybody,

We are using NPrinting 17.2.3, and we are trying to import users and filters, based on the example spreadsheet provided by Qlik.

I can only create filters with values based on one connection per filter. However we have apps using more than one connection, and we wish to keep it simple and have an unique user filter per app.

I am attaching an import spreadsheet that works with the filter named 'User1 filter' created with the field [Field 1] from the connection 'Connection1' filtered on the value 'Value 1'. How can I add to the same 'User1 filter' a filter on the field [Field 2] with the value 'Value 2' from the connection 'Connection2' ?

Thank you.

Bruno

Bruno - I guess you have 2 choices: Apply my solution or have multiple import tasks.

It sounds that you are looking for linked fields between apps.
Unfortunately this is not available.

Future updates regarding this would be published here:

Limitations

Unsupported features

There are features available in QlikView NPrinting 16 that are not supported in Qlik NPrinting November 2019. These features are not migrated:

  • FTP destinations
  • Pretty good privacy (PGP) encryption
  • Test tasks
  • Attach external files to email
  • Unsupported output formats (.docm, .pptm)
  • Compressed generated reports
  • Importing external HTML files into email bodies
  • Linked fields

A feature request has also been posted here as well. Please feel free to upvote for it/like here:

As a workaround that is commonly used, we recommend creating an app that contains all data and fields that you require for reporting purposes.

Kind regards...

Hi Bruno,

Bad news is you have to create 2 filters with 2 different names. Then you have to list both filters...

This is because NPrinting has to specificly connect right filter to right connection without guessing which connection is used in report as you can have 2 connections in 1 report!

cheers

Lech

Hi Lech,

From the admin interface, it is possible to create a filter that is applied on fields from different connections. I can specify which connection is used for each field. This is what I would like to do during the import.

And in the previous version of NPrinting, it was possible to import user filters from different connections using the syntax:

[Connection].[Field]={....}

I tried this in the value column, but it doesn't work.

The only workaround that seems to be working is to create multiple import tasks, against the same filters, with the update filter setting for the task selected. It is quite cumbersome and harder to maintain, therefore I am seeking a more efficient way I may have missed.

Cheers,

Bruno

Hi Bruno - I see your point!

rpc‌ - Ruggerro - what do you think? any ideas how we could help Bruno. I think this is quite important topic to discus how it meant to work. For nice & neat NPrinting Apps the way he wants to maintain filters seems to work great! Looking forward to hear from you.

Hi All,

Right now (June 2017) importing user and filter feature in Qlik NPrinting 17 is limited compared with the same feature in the 16.* serie. So what you told is correct and developing this feature is in the to do list but not yet plan right now.

Cheers

Ruggero

Thanks Lech and Ruggero for your answers.

I will have multiple import tasks for the time being.

Hi Lech and @Ruggero_Piccoli

Has this feature been implemented yet? I am struggling to find information about it.

I am sitting with the same problem as Bruno had in 2017. I am working with NPrinting Feb2021

Kind regards

Sindy

Hi,

The 16 syntax [Connection].[Field]={....} is not yet supported in NP17+ (latest is February 2021). The connection name must be in the column "Connection" and you can specify only one for each row of the Excel file.

You can create one filter for each row and add to the user as many filters as you want.

Best Regards,

Ruggero
